Gift cards are sellable, redeemable balances customers can buy on your booking site or in person. The Gift cards page is the hub for everything gift-card-related: the types (templates) that define how a gift card behaves, the actual purchases your customers make, and the settings that control how gift cards show up on your booking site.
Getting started
Navigate to Purchases > Gift cards from the sidebar. The page opens with three tabs.
How it works
A gift card has two layers. A gift card type is the template: it defines whether the card has a fixed value or lets the customer pick the amount, when it's delivered, when it activates, when it expires, and what it looks like. A gift card purchase is the actual sold card: a unique code generated against a type, with a customer attached, a balance that decreases as it's redeemed, and an activity log tracking every change.
The three tabs across the top of the page split those concerns.
| Tab | What you do | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Gift card purchases | Create new gift card sales, view sold cards, adjust balances, resend delivery emails, deactivate, and review activity | Gift card purchases |
| Gift card types | Create and manage the templates: value rules, delivery, expiration, activation, policies, and designs | Gift card types |
| Gift card settings | Customize the gift card section of your booking site: title, description, button text, and background image | Gift card settings |
Step-by-step guide
Sell your first gift card
The setup runs in this order: configure the booking site display, create at least one gift card type, then take orders from the booking site or create purchases manually.
- Open the Gift card settings tab and customize the title, description, button text, and background image. Save.
- Open the Gift card types tab and click Create a gift card type. Configure the value, delivery, activation, expiration, policies, and at least one design. Save.
- Customers can now buy on your booking site. To create a purchase manually, open the Gift card purchases tab and click Create a gift card purchase.
Manage existing gift cards
Open the Gift card purchases tab to find a sold card, copy its code, adjust the balance, resend the delivery email, download the PDF, view the transaction it was bought on, deactivate it, or review every change in the activity log. See Gift card purchases for the full per-row action menu.

The per-row three-dot menu offers, depending on permissions and the card's status: Edit gift card, Adjust value, View transaction, Resend delivery email, Download PDF, View activity log, Deactivate gift card (or Activate gift card for inactive cards).

Good to know
- Types are templates, purchases are records. Editing a type changes future purchases; cards already sold keep the settings they had at purchase time.
- A type needs at least one design before you can save it. Add a design image and adjust scale/position to make sure it crops nicely.
- Internal-only types never appear on the booking site. Use them for staff-issued cards (refunds, complimentary gifts, makegoods) without polluting the customer-facing menu.
- Refund gift cards issued from the Transaction details refund flow show up in the Purchases tab with a refund badge so you can filter them apart from regular sales.
- Deactivating a type stops new sales but doesn't affect cards already issued. Deactivating a card prevents redemption but preserves the balance and history; reactivating restores full functionality.
- Balance adjustments require a reason. Every increase or decrease is logged in the activity log along with who made it and why, so you have an audit trail.
- Gift card codes are copy-friendly. Click the copy icon next to any code in the table to put it on your clipboard.
FAQ
Q: Can customers buy gift cards online?
A: Yes, as long as you have at least one active gift card type that's not marked Internal only. Those types appear on your booking site for customer purchase.
Q: Do gift cards expire?
A: Only when the type is configured to expire. Open the type, toggle Allow gift cards to expire, and pick either "after a period" (e.g., 1 year) or "on a specific date".
Q: Can a gift card be used for multiple purchases?
A: Yes. The remaining balance decreases with each redemption until it hits zero, then the card is fully redeemed and stays in the system for record-keeping.
Q: What's the difference between deactivating a type and a card?
A: Deactivating a type stops you from selling more of that template; cards already sold keep working. Deactivating a card stops that specific card from being redeemed; the balance is preserved and reactivation is reversible.
Q: Where do I customize the email customers get with their gift card?
A: The delivery email content lives in Mail > Templates under the gift card delivery template. The visual design (image, layout) on the gift card itself is configured per-type on the Designs section of the gift card type editor.
