DNS Mapping

Last updated April 4, 2026

Why should I setup DNS mapping for custom email domains?

DNS mapping allows automated emails to appear as coming from your domain rather than Off The Couch. DNS mapping, or setting up your Domain Name System records, is the critical process that connects your domain name to the IP address of your web hosting server. This is essential for your website and professional email to work.

The essential first step is to obtain the necessary records (A records and Nameservers) from your web hosting provider. Once you have this critical information, you simply update the DNS settings in your domain registrar's control panel to point your domain name to your host's server.

Quick notes:

  • You cannot set up DNS mapping for generic email providers (e.g., @gmail.com).
  • You must own the domain you wish to use (e.g., info@yourbusiness.com).

If configured, emails will show as:

  • With DNS mapping: "Your_Business_info@yourbusiness.com"
  • Without DNS mapping: "Your_Business_info@offthecouch.io"

Benefits to setting it up

  • Professionalism & Trust: A custom domain (e.g., yourcompany.com) is mapped to your site, replacing generic IP addresses and establishing a professional, trustworthy online identity.
  • Reliable Website Access: Ensures that customers are consistently and reliably directed to your website every time they type in your domain name, preventing broken links and lost traffic.
  • Effective Email Delivery: Crucial MX records ensure that your business emails (e.g., info@yourcompany.com) are correctly routed, improving email deliverability and reducing the chance of messages being lost or marked as spam.
  • Brand Consistency: Allows you to use the same domain across all your services, including your website, email, and subdomains (like shop.yourcompany.com), reinforcing your brand identity.
  • SEO Optimization: Consistent domain resolution is vital for search engine crawlers, contributing to better indexing and overall Search Engine Optimization (SEO) performance.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: DNS records allow you to easily point your domain to a new web host or email provider in the future without changing your business's public address.
